Ping and lag in Spain

From Madrid, the closest major cloud region is Spain, where a good wired line usually sees about 12 ms. Across the 10 biggest cities in Spain, the nearest region is 8 to 38 ms away. A game's own servers may be closer still, so use these as a yardstick and test your real ping below.

Where Spain's traffic meets the rest of the internet

Spain's cloud region is in Aragón, between Madrid and Barcelona, and ESpanix in Madrid is the main place Spanish networks meet. Some games now host in Madrid, and many still put Spanish players on EU West servers in Paris, Frankfurt or London, which adds about 10 to 20 ms. The Canary Islands are almost 2,000 km from the mainland and reach it over undersea cables, so ping from there is noticeably higher to every server.

Test your real ping from Spain

Measured from this browser to the same regions. Close to the table means your line is healthy; a lot more means something is adding lag, and the Lag Check finds what.

Ping to game and call servers

Round trips to the cloud regions where most game, voice and video servers run. Distance sets a floor on your ping that no setting at home can lower, so pick the closest region when a game lets you.

Broadband in Spain and what it means for lag

Spain has some of the highest fibre-to-the-home coverage in Europe, so most city homes can get a line with a low, steady ping. Older ADSL lines and 4G home routers in rural areas are slower and less stable. On fibre, high ping is rarely the line itself: it is usually Wi-Fi, or bufferbloat when someone uploads.

Evenings, roughly 7 to 11 pm Spanish time, are when most homes stream and play at once. If lag only shows up then, run a Lag Check in the evening: lag under load points at your own line, a slow route at every hour points beyond it.

Routers in Spain and Smart Queue

Most homes use the router their provider supplied, and these rarely have Smart Queue. Many providers let you put their router in bridge mode or swap in your own, so a router with Smart Queue can take over; the router guides show where the setting is on each brand.

Questions about ping in Spain

Which server should I pick in Spain?

A Spain or Madrid server if the game has one; otherwise the EU West option, usually Paris. From the mainland a good wired line sees about 10 to 20 ms to the Spain region and 20 to 30 ms to Paris.

Why is my ping high in the Canary Islands?

Traffic has to cross almost 2,000 km of undersea cable to reach the mainland before it goes anywhere else, which adds about 25 ms. That part can't be fixed at home, but Wi-Fi and bufferbloat on top of it can.

Other countries

How we estimate: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, a normal route runs about 1.5 times the straight line, and a good home line adds about 8 ms. Region locations are approximate and games may use other data centres nearby. Updated 2026-10-30.
