Ping and lag in Italy

From Rome, the closest major cloud region is Milan, where a good wired line usually sees about 15 ms. Across the 10 biggest cities in Italy, the nearest region is 8 to 23 ms away. A game's own servers may be closer still, so use these as a yardstick and test your real ping below.

Where Italy's traffic meets the rest of the internet

Milan hosts Italy's cloud region and MIX, its biggest internet exchange, and Rome has another, Namex. Most Italian traffic meets other networks in Milan, so from the north, ping to Milan, Zurich and even Frankfurt is low. From the south and the islands, traffic first travels up the peninsula, which is why ping from Palermo or Catania is higher than from Milan even to the same server.

Test your real ping from Italy

Measured from this browser to the same regions. Close to the table means your line is healthy; a lot more means something is adding lag, and the Lag Check finds what.

Ping to game and call servers

Round trips to the cloud regions where most game, voice and video servers run. Distance sets a floor on your ping that no setting at home can lower, so pick the closest region when a game lets you.

Broadband in Italy and what it means for lag

Italian homes use a mix of FTTC (fibre to the cabinet, VDSL over the last stretch of copper) and fibre to the home, which is spreading city by city. In rural areas, fixed wireless (FWA) is common and adds some delay and variation. On any of them, lag that appears only when someone streams or uploads is bufferbloat, and a router with Smart Queue fixes it.

Evenings, roughly 7 to 11 pm Italian time, are when most homes stream and play at once. If lag only shows up then, run a Lag Check in the evening: lag under load points at your own line, a slow route at every hour points beyond it.

Routers in Italy and Smart Queue

Many people use the modem their provider supplied, and FRITZ!Box routers are also popular. Provider modems rarely offer Smart Queue; a FRITZ!Box can prioritise games and calls, and a router with full Smart Queue behind the modem fixes lag under load completely. The router guides show where the setting is on each brand.

Questions about ping in Italy

Which server should I pick in Italy?

Usually the game's Italy or Central Europe servers. From the north, Milan is a few milliseconds away; from Rome and the south, Milan is still usually the closest region, with Frankfurt and Zurich close behind. Pick by the ping the game shows.

Why is my ping higher in Sicily or the south?

Most traffic travels to Milan or Rome before it reaches other networks, which adds distance before it even leaves Italy. Wi-Fi and a busy line add more on top, and those two you can fix at home.

How we estimate: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, a normal route runs about 1.5 times the straight line, and a good home line adds about 8 ms. Region locations are approximate and games may use other data centres nearby. Updated 2026-10-30.
