Fix bufferbloat on TP-Link routers

Priority QoS only

Usually not. TP-Link Archer routers and Deco mesh have QoS that sets device priority and total bandwidth, not real Smart Queue.

TP-Link's QoS lets you pick devices or apps to go first and asks for your total bandwidth. Setting that bandwidth just under your real speed can help a little, but it doesn't keep queues short the way fq_codel or CAKE does.

1. Test before you change anything

Run the Lag Check and note the "Lag under load" grade and your download and upload speeds. You'll compare against it afterwards.

2. Where the setting is

Archer routers

  1. Open the router at tplinkwifi.net and look for QoS under the Advanced settings (on some models it's inside HomeShield).
  2. Turn on QoS, enter your upload and download bandwidth, and set your gaming or work device to high priority.
  3. Menus differ between models and firmware versions.

Deco mesh

  1. In the Deco app, find QoS (usually under More).
  2. Set your bandwidth and give your gaming or work device high priority.

3. The numbers to enter

TP-Link asks for Mbps. Try about 85 to 90% of your measured speed, then test again.

Work out my limits

The assistant starts at 90% of your measured speed and tells you when to drop to 85% or 80%.

Gotchas

  • On some models, QoS turns off NAT Boost (hardware NAT), which lowers top speed on fast lines.
  • Priority helps the chosen device a little and does nothing for everyone else. If the lag grade stays at C or worse, the router can't fix it.

No real Smart Queue? Your options

  • Some newer TP-Link models support OpenWrt; check the OpenWrt table of hardware for your exact model and version before flashing.
  • Put a Smart Queue router between your modem (or ISP box) and this system. A GL.iNet travel or home router running its built-in OpenWrt, or any router that runs OpenWrt, can do CAKE for well under the price of a new mesh.

Test after the change. A good setup brings lag under load down to A or B.
