Automatic bufferbloat fix

Yes, automatically. eero's Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming setting is aimed at lag under load, but you can't enter your own limits.

The setting manages the queue on your eero gateway so calls and games stay responsive while the line is busy. It picks its own limits, so there's nothing to type in; just turn it on and compare the lag grade.

1. Test before you change anything

Run the Lag Check and note the "Lag under load" grade and your download and upload speeds. You'll compare against it afterwards.

2. Where the setting is

  1. Open the eero app and go to Settings → eero Labs.
  2. Turn on Optimize for Conferencing and Gaming.
  3. Wait a minute, then test again. If it isn't listed, update the eero firmware in the app.

3. The numbers to enter

There are no numbers to enter. The Smart Queue assistant still shows your before and after, so run the Lag Check with the setting off and on.

Work out my limits

The assistant starts at 90% of your measured speed and tells you when to drop to 85% or 80%.

Gotchas

  • It can lower top speed a little. That's the trade for lower lag.
  • It only works on the eero connected to your modem. If an ISP router sits in front and does its own routing, the queue may build there instead.

If it isn't enough

  • If the grade stays at C or worse with it on, put a Smart Queue router between your modem (or ISP box) and this system. A GL.iNet travel or home router running its built-in OpenWrt, or any router that runs OpenWrt, can do CAKE for well under the price of a new mesh.

Test after the change. A good setup brings lag under load down to A or B.
