Ping and lag in Canada
From Toronto, the closest major cloud region is Montréal, where a good wired line usually sees about 16 ms. Across the 10 biggest cities in Canada, the nearest region is 8 to 26 ms away. A game's own servers may be closer still, so use these as a yardstick and test your real ping below.

Where Canada's traffic meets the rest of the internet
Two cloud regions are in Canada itself, in Montréal and Calgary, and Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver are the main places where Canadian networks hand traffic to each other. Games that don't host in Canada put Canadian players on US servers: Ontario, Québec and the Atlantic provinces sit close to the US East regions, British Columbia and Alberta close to Oregon. The Prairies fall in between: from Winnipeg, a game's US Central servers are often as close as either coast.
Test your real ping from Canada
Measured from this browser to the same regions. Close to the table means your line is healthy; a lot more means something is adding lag, and the Lag Check finds what.
Ping to game and call servers
Round trips to the cloud regions where most game, voice and video servers run. Distance sets a floor on your ping that no setting at home can lower, so pick the closest region when a game lets you.
Broadband in Canada and what it means for lag
In the big cities most homes are on cable or fibre, and both can give a low, steady ping when the line isn't full. Across the Prairies, the North and much of rural Canada, fixed wireless, DSL and satellite are common, and each adds lag that distance doesn't explain: satellite in orbit far away adds the most, low-orbit satellite much less but with regular spikes as the dish switches satellites. If the ping you measure below is far above the table, the line type is usually why.
Evenings, roughly 7 to 11 pm local time, are when most homes stream and play at once. If lag only shows up then, run a Lag Check in the evening: lag under load points at your own line, a slow route at every hour points beyond it.
Routers in Canada and Smart Queue
Most providers supply a combined modem and router, and these rarely have a Smart Queue setting. If yours doesn't, put your own router behind it (the provider's box in bridge or advanced DMZ mode) and turn Smart Queue on there; the router guides show where the setting is on each brand.
Questions about ping in Canada
Should I pick US East, Central or West servers in Canada?
Pick by the ping the game shows, but as a rule: Ontario, Québec and the Atlantic provinces are closest to US East, British Columbia and Alberta to US West, and Manitoba and Saskatchewan to Central. The table above shows the estimate for each big city.
Why is my ping high on rural internet in Canada?
Fixed wireless, DSL and satellite lines add their own delay before traffic even reaches a city, and wireless links add spikes when the signal or the tower is busy. A Lag Check shows whether the lag is steady (distance and line type) or rises when the line is busy (bufferbloat, which Smart Queue fixes).

How we estimate: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, a normal route runs about 1.5 times the straight line, and a good home line adds about 8 ms. Region locations are approximate and games may use other data centres nearby. Updated 2026-10-30.
