Ping and lag in Germany

From Berlin, the closest major cloud region is Frankfurt, where a good wired line usually sees about 14 ms. Across the 10 biggest cities in Germany, the nearest region is 8 to 14 ms away. A game's own servers may be closer still, so use these as a yardstick and test your real ping below.

Where Germany's traffic meets the rest of the internet

Frankfurt is home to DE-CIX, one of the largest internet exchanges in the world, and to a major cloud region, so almost every German connection is a short hop from it. Many games run their central European servers in or near Frankfurt, which puts most of Germany within a very low ping of them. Berlin, Hamburg and Munich have exchanges of their own, but plenty of traffic still travels to Frankfurt first, so the route your provider takes matters more than the straight-line distance.

Test your real ping from Germany

Measured from this browser to the same regions. Close to the table means your line is healthy; a lot more means something is adding lag, and the Lag Check finds what.

Ping to game and call servers

Round trips to the cloud regions where most game, voice and video servers run. Distance sets a floor on your ping that no setting at home can lower, so pick the closest region when a game lets you.

Broadband in Germany and what it means for lag

Most German homes are on VDSL (often with vectoring) over the phone line or on cable, while fibre to the home is growing but still the smaller share. Cable capacity is shared by the street, so it can slow down and lag in the evenings; VDSL is steadier but its speed falls with the distance to the cabinet. On any line, ping that jumps only while someone downloads or uploads is bufferbloat rather than the provider's network.

Evenings, roughly 7 to 11 pm German time, are when most homes stream and play at once. If lag only shows up then, run a Lag Check in the evening: lag under load points at your own line, a slow route at every hour points beyond it.

Routers in Germany and Smart Queue

FRITZ!Box routers are everywhere in Germany. They don't offer full Smart Queue (SQM), but FRITZ!OS can prioritise real-time traffic and individual devices (under Internet, Filters, Prioritisation), which helps games and calls when others download. For a full fix, a router with Smart Queue can sit behind the FRITZ!Box; the router guides show the brands that have it.

Questions about ping in Germany

Which server should I pick in Germany?

Usually the game's Central Europe or Germany servers, which are often in or near Frankfurt. From most German cities a good wired line sees about 10 to 20 ms there; the table above shows the estimate for each big city.

Does a FRITZ!Box fix lag when others are downloading?

Partly. Its prioritisation gives games and calls a head start, which helps, but it doesn't manage the queue the way Smart Queue (SQM) does. Run the Lag Check before and after turning it on: the lag under load figure shows how much it helped.

How we estimate: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, a normal route runs about 1.5 times the straight line, and a good home line adds about 8 ms. Region locations are approximate and games may use other data centres nearby. Updated 2026-10-30.
