Ping and lag in France
From Paris, the closest major cloud region is Paris, where a good wired line usually sees about 8 ms. Across the 10 biggest cities in France, the nearest region is 8 to 15 ms away. A game's own servers may be closer still, so use these as a yardstick and test your real ping below.

Where France's traffic meets the rest of the internet
Paris has a cloud region and France-IX, the country's main internet exchange, so most French traffic meets other networks there. Marseille is the other big hub: it is where many undersea cables from Africa, the Middle East and Asia land, so it is well connected to the rest of Europe too. From the north and centre of France, Paris is usually the closest region; from the south-west the Spain region is nearer, and from the south-east Milan or Zurich.
Test your real ping from France
Measured from this browser to the same regions. Close to the table means your line is healthy; a lot more means something is adding lag, and the Lag Check finds what.
Ping to game and call servers
Round trips to the cloud regions where most game, voice and video servers run. Distance sets a floor on your ping that no setting at home can lower, so pick the closest region when a game lets you.
Broadband in France and what it means for lag
France has one of the highest rates of fibre to the home in Europe, and on fibre a wired connection can see a very low, steady ping. Where fibre hasn't arrived, ADSL and VDSL on long copper lines are slower and more prone to lag spikes, and 4G or 5G home boxes add variation of their own. If your ping is well above the table, check whether you are on Wi-Fi first: it is the most common cause.
Evenings, roughly 7 to 11 pm French time, are when most homes stream and play at once. If lag only shows up then, run a Lag Check in the evening: lag under load points at your own line, a slow route at every hour points beyond it.
Routers in France and Smart Queue
Most homes use the box their provider supplied. Few of these boxes offer Smart Queue settings. Fibre's fast upload makes bufferbloat less common, but it still happens when uploads or cloud backups fill the line; in that case a router with Smart Queue behind the box fixes it, and the router guides show where the setting is.
Questions about ping in France
What is a good ping in France?
On fibre with a cable to the box, about 8 to 20 ms to a Paris server is normal, and anything under about 40 ms is fine for fast games. Wi-Fi usually adds a few milliseconds and some spikes.
Why does my ping jump when someone uploads, even on fibre?
A big upload fills the queue in your box, and your game's packets wait behind it. That's bufferbloat. The Lag Check measures it, and Smart Queue on a router behind the box fixes it.
Other countries
How we estimate: light in fibre covers about 200 km per millisecond, a normal route runs about 1.5 times the straight line, and a good home line adds about 8 ms. Region locations are approximate and games may use other data centres nearby. Updated 2026-10-30.
